Black Sesame Oil
Sesamum indicum
Keep your skin supple and glowing while promoting elasticity with this softening oil.
Black sesame oil is made from unhulled sesame seeds, which, culinarily speaking, gives the oil a more aromatic flavour profile than white sesame oil made from hulled seeds. Whilst both oils boast excellent properties, black sesame oil tends to retain a higher nutrient profile, thanks to the seeds' outer shell.
What are the benefits of black sesame oil for you?
• Firming • Highly moisturising • ProtectiveRich in vitamin E and fatty acids, it's a deeply nourishing oil that can calm inflammation and help our skin cells protect themselves from oxidative stress. Despite being incredibly moisturising, black sesame oil is lightweight, making it suitable for use on skin prone to blocked pores and breakouts.
Sun, stabilise, sesame!
Sesame oil contains a natural preservative called sesamol, which helps stabilise the oil and resist oxidation, making it a great addition to help our products last longer. Thanks to a similarly named compound, sesamin, the oil has a stimulating effect on melanin production, making it one of the few vegetable oils that may actively protect the skin from the sun's rays. We wouldn't advise using it alone for this purpose, though it could support the effectiveness of other sunscreen agents.
Where does Lush source black sesame oil?
Lush source this oil from Japan. Our supplier follows a lengthy and delicate process of selecting seeds, roasting them in wood-fired ovens, then pressing, purifying, and filtering to deliver a sesame oil renowned for its exceptional quality. This production process is entrusted to just 11 employees; craftsmen who are carefully trained by the third generation of the Yamada Seiyu family, who have overseen sesame oil production for over 100 years.
